People’s Choice: Pirate Ship
By Dan Slater, Las Vegas, Nev.
Dan Slater created this pirate scene based on the idea of Blackbeard’s nephew.
“All of the really good pirates have already been carved,” Dan said. “So I carved Blackbeard’s idiot nephew.”
Dan carved the hull of the boat, the water, and the planks from a single piece of basswood. The rest of the pieces were carved separately and attached. Dan used brass plates and rods to make the hardware on the cannon and the pirate’s hook. Dan finished the piece with acrylic paint.
Editor’s Choice: Cough It Up
By Daryl Korpela, Oconomowoc, Wis.
Daryl Korpela carved this caricature piece to serve as the top of a cane project for his woodcarving club.
“The theme was Wisconsin,” Daryl explained. “The project started out as a muskie and evolved into a guy holding the muskie.”
The muskie, angler, and cooler were all carved from one piece of basswood. The piece measures 4″ tall, 21/2″ thick, and 21/2″ wide. Daryl finished the carving with Delta Ceramcoat acrylic paints and varnish.
