People’s Choice: She Wolf and Cub
By Tim Desrochers, Winnipeg, Man., Canada
Tim Desrochers carved this wolf sculpture from a cottonwood log.
“I look at a piece of wood and it speaks to me,” Tim said. “I see the carving within the wood. I admire the wolves’ strength and power, beauty and grace.”
Tim used chainsaws, a rotary-power carver, an angle grinder, and several sanding tools to create this piece.
The carving measures 62″ tall and the base is 42″ across. Tim woodburned details on the carving and used a diluted pickling stain around the eyes. Tim used a stone-effect paint for the rocks.

By John Downs, Gillmanton, N.H.
John Downs was inspired by the wood itself when he created this design.
“This carving is made from one single pice of wood,” John explained. “Even the base is included in the carving.”
John carved the piece out of a solid chunk of basswood. The piece, including base, measures 18″ tall, 8″ wide, and 6″ thick. John applied a natural finish to the piece.
